ROOFTOP BAR AND COWORKING OFFICE TO OPEN IN HEART OF THE CITY II

Thursday 19th September 2019

Following a marketing exercise in the summer, property management specialists Staton Young, has been selected by the Council as operators for 38 Carver Street.

Staton Young will transform the property to provide an exciting multi-use facility that helps drive economic growth and adds to the vibrancy of the wider Heart of the City II development scheme.

Staton Young is working with the Council and its strategic development partner, Queensberry, to bring Cubo – a new style of serviced offices – to the city centre site. It intends to revive the five-storey, glass-fronted building and expand the existing workspace from 26,000 to 32,000 sq ft.

A planning application will be submitted, and terms are close on a 20-year lease between Sheffield City Council and Staton Young.

Cubo addresses the needs of the modern worker. Its experience-led environment will feature co-working space, private offices, meeting rooms, printing stations, designated desks or memberships for hot-desking.

Table tennis, football tables and games consoles will be available in the communal areas. There will also be space for yoga and wellness classes, plus free beverages (from tea and coffee, to beer and prosecco).

In addition to the office space, Staton Young hope to open Alto, a rooftop bar, on the top floor of the building. Open to the public, this will introduce a new and much sought-after dynamic to Sheffield’s nightlife.

Alto, which already has a popular venue in Nottingham of the same name, will include a roof terrace with magnificent views across the city’s skyline.

Set for completion in 2020, the building sits within a rapidly growing business district that is being transformed through the Heart of the City II project. It is just a stone’s throw from the new public realm at Charter Square and the independent bars and restaurants of the Devonshire Quarter.

Councillor Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said:

Heart of the City II is delivering jobs, opportunities and renewed vibrancy to our brilliant city centre. We have always said that we wanted an innovative and creative heart that combines the best in retail, residential and nightlife. This scheme will create a truly 21st century office space that suits the way people do business in Sheffield. And a rooftop bar is a perfect example of a 21st century vision, ensuring that Heart of the City II has an appeal morning, noon and night.”

Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment at Sheffield City Council, said:

We are delighted to announce yet another new business coming into the city. 38 Carver Street is a property with great potential and this exciting plan and will bring something special and unique, boosting both our business and social offer. We purposely targeted a modern office operator like Cubo. We hope its emphasis on coworking will provide more opportunities for smaller and start-up companies within the creative and digital industries. It’s another sign that we are delivering the compelling mix of office space, residential and nightlife that will put the city head and shoulders above others in the country. In this case, 38 Carver Street will see several uses under one roof bringing a new personality and vibrancy to one of our most interesting buildings.”

Paul Sargent, Chief Executive at Queensberry, said:

Cubo is exactly the type of operator we want for Sheffield. We’re delivering over 550,000 sq ft of office space in the city centre and we’re confident we can attract and retain both entrepreneurs and established business. We are also developing brand new homes, hotels, cafés, restaurants and shops. It’s a great time to be located in Sheffield.”

Marc Brough, Managing Director of Staton Young, commented:

Cubo’s portfolio already includes Nottingham and Derby, and we are extremely excited to expand the brand further. The vibrant and creative city of Sheffield feels like a natural addition.”

John Morgan, Director at Leonard Design Architects, said:

It’s been great to help develop this concept. Our team visited innovative coworking spaces in London, New York and Oslo to bring the best elements of each to Cubo in Sheffield. It’s very exciting that another piece of the Heart of the City II masterplan is being brought forward and delivered.”
